Labor Law Poster

If you have ever held employment in the U.S. then you have seen the many labor law posters informing you of your rights as an employee. While it may be hard to believe, it really was not that long ago that those who were a part of this nation's workforce were often ignorant of their rights given to them under employment law. In fact, go just a little further back in the history of our economy, you will quickly discover that at one time, the employee had very little in the way of rights and in many cases would often be treated as a slave.

For many people it is hard to look back from where we are now. Right now, if you don't like a particular job, you are for the most part free to leave it. Yet, not too long ago, there were laws in some places that actually prevented an employee from quitting. However, even though they faced long odds and a very powerful force, some very brave men and women took a stand. This was the beginning of what we now know as unions.

Feel how you wish about the role unions currently play in our economy, but believe it or not, the very labor law poster that informs you of your rights as an employee would not have been there, had it not been for their efforts. These people not only lost their jobs, but in many cases also faced threats of violence and in some cases death. Yet they believed so strongly    about their rights, that they chose to stand against the tyrants of their time, and while many of them did not live to see it, the rights we have today are a direct result of their actions.

So next time you feel like you have it bad. Take some time and think how it would feel to be paid unlivable wages, live in perpetual debt to your boss, and have little to any voice in the conditions of your work place. Imagine how it would be to know that you could easily be imprisoned, beaten, or even killed simply for refusing to work when you or a family member were ill. You would probably agree that while your job may not be the best thing in the world, it is far better than what many other people have.

So next time you look at a labor law poster. Realize that it is a symbol of freedom. It is a guarantee to you that you have rights. If ever you feel as though those rights have not been respected, then take action. After all many people made great sacrifices for your rights and freedom to work.
